Deep Dish Pizza for Two

This Easy Deep Dish Pizza is seriously delicious! Fresh homemade pizza dough is topped with fresh mozzarella, pizza sauce and your favorite toppings.

I filled this homemade crust with mushrooms, onions, mozzarella, pepperoni, lots of pizza sauce, basil and garnished it with fresh parsley.

You can swap out the toppings for whatever you prefer to eat on your pizza including a meatless version.

This recipe makes a small batch deep dish pizza made in a 9 inch springform pan and is cut into 4 slices.

Make this recipe for an impressive lunch, dinner, or romantic date night meal for two.

How to make deep dish pizza:

If you’re using fresh mozzarella that you plan to shred, place it in the freezer to chill while preparing the crust.

For the deep dish crust:

Preheat the oven to 170 degrees F (76.67 C). This is for allowing the dough to rise.

Mix warm water, yeast and sugar and let sit for about 5 minutes to get frothy. The water is the right temperature when it feels warm to your finger but not hot. If the water is too hot it will kill the yeast.

In a bowl, add the flour, salt, oil and yeast mixture. Mix until well combined with a spoon.

Knead the dough for a few seconds to make a soft dough.

Cover the bowl with a damp towel.

Turn off the oven and place the dough inside with the door closed to rise for 15 minutes.

Take the dough out of the oven.

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220  C).

Spray a 9 inch springform pan with non-stick spray. Click for a leakproof 9 inch springform pan.

Spray non-stick spray on the dough, then use your hands and make a somewhat smooth ball.

Using your fingers spread the dough inside the springform pan pressing up the sides to just above the edge. Keep the bottom thick enough to support the weight of the filling.

For the toppings:

Slice the mushrooms, if they aren’t already sliced, and dice the onion.

If you placed the mozzarella in the freezer, remove it and shred or slice.

To assemble:

Layer half of the mozzarella on top of the dough.

Spread on ¾ cup of pizza sauce.

Top with the pepperoni.

Then add the mushrooms, half of the onions, and sprinkle on a ½ teaspoon of basil.

Add another ¾ cup of sauce.

Top with the other half of the mozzarella cheese.

Sprinkle the remaining onions and ½ teaspoon of basil over the top.

Garnish with fresh parsley over the top if desired.

Roll down the edge of the dough all the way around to meet the top of the pizza filling.

Bake for 35 minutes.

Let the pizza cool about 10 minutes and remove the outer ring of the springform pan.

Slice into 4 slices.

For the deep dish crust:

  • 3/4 cup warm water (not hot)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons active yeast
  • 1/4 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

For the toppings (swap out toppings to your taste):

  • 1/4 cup onion
  • 4 oz mushrooms
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Pepperoni
  • 8 oz fresh mozzarella cheese (shredded or sliced)
  • 1 1/2 cups pizza sauce
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optinal)
