French Onion Chicken Sandwich

This French Onion Chicken Sandwich has juicy grilled chicken topped with melted Swiss cheese, caramelized onions, and fresh baby spinach on a lightly toasted deli sandwich bun. 

These sandwiches are easy and delicious and this recipe for two makes a great lunch, dinner, or fun date night meal idea.

The chicken can also be pan fried or broiled if you would rather not grill it.

My husband added horseradish sauce to his sandwich to kick it up a notch and loved it.

How to make French Onion Chicken Sandwiches

Slice the onion and separate it into rings.

In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium-low heat.

Add onion, sugar, onion powder, and garlic powder. Cook and stir often, about 20 minutes, or until onions are soft and caramelized.

Turn the heat to low and cover to keep warm.

Preheat the grill for direct grilling over medium-high heat.

Place the two pieces of chicken between two sheets of plastic wrap and pound them flat with a meat mallet. Click for a meat mallet.

Transfer the chicken to the hot grill rack.

Close the lid and cook for about 5-7 minutes.

Optional – place the sandwich rolls on the grill to toast the insides just until lightly browned. Move them to the top warming rack to keep warm while the chicken finishes cooking.

Flip the chicken over and cook another 5-7 minutes or until the chicken loses its pink color throughout and the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees F.

Place the Swiss cheese slices on top of the chicken pieces.

Close the lid and cook for 1 minute or until cheese begins to melt.

Assemble the sandwiches using sandwich buns, spinach, chicken with Swiss cheese, and caramelized onions.

Serve and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 2 boneless skinless chicken filets (4oz each)
  • 2 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 hamburger buns (or deli sandwich buns)
  • 1 cup baby spinach
