Homemade Meatball Subs

These easy Homemade Meatball Subs have toasted garlic butter hoagie rolls filled with juicy baked homemade meatballs and spaghetti sauce topped with mozzarella cheese then are broiled until melted.

This delicious meatball sandwich recipe makes a great lunch, dinner, game day food, or romantic date night dinner for two.

How to make Italian Meatball Subs

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

In a bowl, combine the lean ground beef, egg yolk, Italian-style bread crumbs, Italian seasoning, onion powder, salt and pepper to taste.

Roll into 8 equal-sized balls and place on a small parchment-lined baking sheet.

Bake for 20 minutes or until cooked through.

At the same time heat the spaghetti sauce in a medium saucepan and simmer covered 10 minutes.

When the meatballs are done baking, stir them into the spaghetti sauce.

Soften the butter and mix the garlic into it.

Spread the garlic butter mixture on the insides of each roll.

Heat the oven on broil.

Place the hoagie sub rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and broil open-faced until lightly golden, about 2 minutes.

Remove from the broiler and place 4 meatballs, spaghetti sauce, and mozzarella in each roll.

Broil for 1 - 3 minutes or until the cheese is melted. Watch closely so the sub bun doesn’t get darker than you would like.

Serve with additional sauce for dipping if desired.

Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

  • ½ pound ground beef (I use 85% lean)
  • 1 egg yolk
  • ¼ cup Italian style bread crumbs
  • ¼ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • salt and pepper to taste

For the Subs:

  • 1 cup spaghetti sauce (or marinara sauce)
  • 2 hoagie sub rolls
  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon jarred minced garlic
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions
